Chinese massage has a long history and dates back to the ancient times. Archaeological studies in recent years have shown that as early as the late period of the New Stone Age around 2700 B.C., the Chinese ancestors in the Yellow River valley primarily summed up the primitive experiences in massage which had been gradually accumulated by their forefathers in their struggle for life and fight against nature. This turned the spontaneous medical behavior that originated from self-defence instinct into a medical mode for the early human race. It was recorded in the reign of Emperor Huang(equating the period of Longshan Culture )Yu Fu had applied the antient massage techniqueanwuto his clinical practice.

Influenced by its different academic sources, lineages, indications and complicated backgrounds of society, provincialism and mores, Chinese massage grew gradually into many academic schools and branches in its long and tortuous history of development.

The present chief schools and academic branches of massage in China are: one finger meditation massage , rolling massage , internal exercise massage , digital acupoint pressure massage , bone-setting massage , traumatic pressing-rubbing therapy , massotherapy ,child massage , viscera and channels massage ,keep-fit massage , health-preserving massage , gastopathy massage , tendon-pinching and patting-beating therapy , finger-pressing massage , finger-pressure therapy , finger-plucking therapy , chiropractic therapy , self-massage , massage with ointment , physical exercise massage , sports massage ,beauty massage , extra-ordinary points massage , midnight-noon ebb-flow massage , channel points massage , Qiao-point massage ,ect. Now here is a brief introduction to some of the schools with greater influence.

1)One-finger meditation massage serves as its chief treatment manipulation accompanied by other eleven methods : grasping , pressing , rubbing , rolling , holding and twisting , sweeping , foulage , quick pushing , kneading , rotating and snaking. It requires that manipulations be soft and penetrating, soft but powerful, with softness being coordinated with strength; it emphasizes that softness is the most valuable. Just because its chief manipulations are extremely difficult, great attention is always paid to its basic training while a series of scientific methods are used for special function training.

2)rolling massage developed on the basis of single-finger massage in the 40’s of the current century . Its chief manipulation is rolling, and the other commonly used manipulations are kneading , pressing , grasping , holding and twisting and foulage . In the process of massage , it often coordinates with the passive movement of the limbs and guides the patients in their initiative movement after massage so as to enhance and consolidate the curative effect . Rolling massage is, in the main, applied to hemiparalysis, infantile paralysis, peripheral paralysis, deviation of mouth and eyes, various kinds of chronic joint diseases, sprain of the joints of waist and the four limbs, tenontothecitis,  scapulohumeral periarthritis, cervical spondylopathy, prolapse of lumbar intervertebral disc, headache and sternocostal pain, etc.

3)Internal exercise massage is chiefly based on palm-pushing. Its clinical manipulations follow these procedures: pushing Qiao gong , separating Yingtang and supra-orbital, sweeping across Taiyang, fice-finger grasping the top of the head, tri-finger grasping the big tendons at the neck, flat-pushing or thenareminence pushing against the chest and back, flat-pushing against the hypochondriac regions, pushing-scrubbing and lifting-grasping at the upper limbs, foulaging the upper limbs, arc-pushing the shoulder joints, pressing-gripping the five fingers, splitting the finger seam, palm-striking on the first, foulaging and shaking the upper limbs, patting on Jianjing points of both shoulders, patting on the two legs, then again five-finger grasping the top of the head, and finally tripart striking, i.e., fist-striking Dazhui, fist-striking Mingmen and the Baliao to invigorate the kidney-yang and premordial qi and conduct the fire back its origin, palm-striking Fengan point on top of the head for tranquilization. The entire regular practice covers the head, face, waist, chest, abdomen and the lower limbs, involving twelve channels and eight extra-channels. It is effective in dredging the channels and collaterals, regulating qi and blood, strengthening the body resistance and nourishing the viscera. Based on this regular practice, massagers take different diseases and consequences into full consideration, increase or reduce their manipulations to form prescriptions. Internal exercise massage is good for the treatment of internal disease due to deficiency and overwork and disease of the departments of surgery and gynecology.

4)Finger-pressing massage is also called “digital point pressing massage” or “finger-pressure therapy”—a massage therapy used in clinical practice to prevent and treat diseases chiefly with digital pressing, pressure massage or nipping on the channel and collateral points. Its basic manipulation is “finger-pressing” which mainly uses the finger tip to press the points. Many, many years ago, The Yellow Emperor’ Internal Classic described the curative effect of pressing as “pressing can resolve blood stasis, dispel qi and relieve pain”. Therefore, this therapy is effective in regulating qi and blood, dredging the channel, adjusting the viscera function and dispersing cold and relieving pain. It can cure all the commonly encountered diseases in the departments of internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, pediatrics and eyes, ear, nose and throat.

5)Digital point pressure therapy, which is evoluted from digital acupoint preesing, point-hitting, point-kicking, point-opening and other actions of the traditional Chinese martial arts. All the digital point pressing methods mentioned above are taken both as means for attack in striking and as therapy for injury treatment. Taking for reference the technical actions of striking and point-hitting, and based on the summarized practical experiences of its own in treatment, digital point therapy has become a well-known school of massage in preventing and treating diseases under the guidance of the theoretical principles of channels and collaterals, qi and blood of traditional Chinese medicine. Its chief manipulation is digital-hitting therapy. The other important manipulations are patting, tapping, pressing, nipping, clutching-grasping, thumping and orthotherapy. Digital point pressing therapy plays a curative role in dredging the channel, promoting the flow of qi and blood circulation, regulating ying and wei strengthening the vital qi to expel external pathogenic factors. Digital acupoint pressing therapy has obtained remarkable curative effect in its clinical treatment for various types of paralysis ,numbness and obstinate rheumatalgia.
